Review: Hounded

Hounded
Hounded by Kevin Hearne

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Atticus O'Sullivan is a 2100 year old Druid, he believes the last remaining Druid. He only looks 21 years old thanks to a special blend of tea he's been taking for a very long time. He owns a new age shop and is on a first named basis with all the Gods. However one God in particular wishes him dead for stealing a powerful and priceless sword. Everyone is involved...vampires, werewolves, witches, several Gods, and many humans under the control of these various characters.

This book falls under the heading of "Urban Fantasy"...it takes place in our time in an urban setting. In this case Tempe, AZ. I did like Mr. Hearne's story and characters, but his descriptions tended to be rather lengthy.

In amongst all the seriousness of monsters coming to kill you, Hounded had some great comic relief in the guise of an Irish Wolfhound named "Oberon" and a 90-something Irish lass down the street that drinks Irish Whiskey like water. The discussions between Atticus and Oberon were laugh out loud funny.

Another thing Mr. Hearne did in his mythology for this series is make it clear that all the Gods exist...Thor, Christ, Vishnu, everyone...which leaves lots of story possibilities. In Hounded, the story centered around the Gods of Celtic mythology this a few references to Norwegian Gods. Apparently everyone hates Thor and I'm hoping he will appear in a future installment.

Overall, it was a very fun read with a lot of laughs...which is always a bonus in my book.

I bought this book and the sequel, and started it a few months ago and put it down. I like the concept, so I'll give it another chance. Sometimes the timing isn't right for a certain book, and it has to wait until I have the time and attention for it! Thanks for the review.
