Review: Old Magic

Old Magic
Old Magic by Marianne Curley

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved, loved, loved Marianne Curley’s “Guardians of Time” trilogy…as soon as I finished it, I had to see what else she had written. I’ve had “Old Magic” sitting beside my nightstand getting dusty for a while and pulled it out on Monday.

Kate is a witch, or so her classmates will tell you. She lives with her grandmother, Jillian, who runs a new-age type shop and is proud of her witch heritage. Jillian is the real deal and very gifted. Kate would tell you she can only manage a few small spells, nothing like Jillian.

Enter Jarrod, the new boy in town. His first day of class, he gets bullied by the “jock” in science class. While that is happening some freak wind blows through class and causes some destruction. Kate see it for what it truly is, Jarrod has some power of his own, make that a lot of power, only he doesn’t know it. Nor is he willing to believe in his power or magic of any kind. The other thing Jarrod can’t reconcile is the streak of bad luck his family has been going through for as long as Jarrod can remember.

When Jarrod’s family starts falling apart at the seams, Jarrod begins to wonder if there isn’t some truth to what Kate and Jillian have been telling him.

Another fantastic, fun read from Marianne Curley. This one has some time travel too, that was a hugely pleasant surprise! Time travel really allows for some great story possibilities, which might explain why I enjoy them so! This one was great, with a ton of twists and turns and Marianne is a master of them. If you like young adult stories, magic, and some medieval history…you gotta read “Old Magic”.
