Review: Lover Unleashed

Lover Unleashed
Lover Unleashed by J.R. Ward

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3.5 Stars!

GoodReads Synopsis: Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.

When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.

As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.

My Thoughts: This installment was definitely more along the lines of the books that started the series…this return to her roots is a good thing for the series. I would have liked to get to know Payne better. We really didn’t learn much of anything about her. I feel like I know the “Brothers” very well, but she feels like just a means to bring Manny into the circle.

While the focus of this story was more about the Payne/Manny romance…we learned a ton about the Vishious/Jane dynamic. I guess I didn’t remember that they, Vishious and Jane, were never mated. I had just assumed they were and I guess I read his installment quite a while ago. Those were some tough scenes to read! But I do love the way Ward handled it.

Less of the lessers here and the introduction of the “Band of Bastards”…which was a nice change. Frankly I was tired of the lessers…and the BoB takes the story into interesting territory!

This books reads much faster than previous installments. It didn’t seem like a 500+ page book. It was a hard one to put down. Can’t wait to see what happens in Lover Reborn.
